Malt Milling Machine/Grain Mill
In a brewery, the malt mill (or grist mill) is a crucial piece of equipment located at the very beginning of the brewing process. Its primary function is to crush the malted barley, preparing it for the mashing stage.

1. Primary Function
The goal of milling is to break apart the malt kernels to expose the starchy endosperm inside, all while keeping the husk as intact as possible. This achieves two critical objectives:
Extraction: The exposed starch can then be converted into fermentable sugars during mashing.
Filtration: The intact husks form a natural filter bed (called the "lauter tun bed") during the sparging process, allowing the sweet liquid (wort) to be separated from the solid grain particles.
A proper crush is essential for efficiency and quality. A grind that is too coarse leads to poor starch conversion and low extract efficiency (low yield). A grind that is too fine, while potentially increasing yield, can cause a stuck sparge, where the grain bed compacts and no liquid can flow through.

2. Main Types of Malt Mills
Breweries typically use one of two main types of mills:
A. Two-Roller Mill
Design: Features two parallel rollers that counter-rotate.
Process: The grain is drawn between the rollers, which crush it. The gap between the rollers determines the crush size.
B. Multi-Roller Mill (e.g., 4-Roller, 6-Roller)
Design: More complex, with two pairs of rollers.

Process:
The grain is first crushed by a wide-gap set of rollers.
This initial crush is then sifted.
The finer particles (grist) proceed, while the larger pieces (with husks) are routed to a second, tighter-gap set of rollers for a final, more precise crush.
